Queensland Smoke Alarm Laws Are Changing

10 questions you should ask when engaging in a building designer

Every rental property and every house sold in Queensland now has to have smoke alarms inside every bedroom and they need to be interconnected – so that if one goes off they all go off.

By the end of 2026, every home in Queensland has to meet the same rules.  The smoke alarms can only be 240v (hard-wired) or powered by a 10 year lithium battery.  The old 9v smoke alarm which many houses have will no longer be allowed.

Interconnected smoke alarms must be installed on every level, inside every bedroom and in hallways between the bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling.

These new rules will help save lives, but it comes at a cost for the home owner.  With an average Queensland home requiring 5 smoke alarms to meet the new rules, the choice of smoke alarm is vitally important.  Some smoke alarms are very expensive, some are prone to false alarms and do not cope well with humidity, temperature changes and insect infestation.  The last thing you want when you have 5 interconnected smoke alarms in your home is for your smoke alarms to go off without reason – the noise is deafening.

When your smoke alarms go off (burnt toast, opening the oven) all smoke alarms will sound – an extremely loud and unsettling experience.  There is now a way to silence the smoke alarms by simply pressing one button on a wall mounted Smoke Alarm Controller provided by Red Smoke Alarms.  This simple device means you will not need to climb on chairs or a ladder to try and silence your alarms.  Press one button for instant silence.  When upgrading your smoke alarms, including a Smoke Alarm Controller is a very wise decision.

Another innovation from Red Smoke Alarms is their designer range of black smoke alarms.  Perfect for media rooms or when you require something a little bit different with your smoke alarms.

Exclusive to Home Show visitors – Red is offering to conduct a Free Smoke Alarm Inspection for your home – checking that your smoke alarms work, are not past their use-by date and also provide a no-obligation quotation for the upgrade of your smoke alarms to meet the new rules.
