Changes in how we consume content are reshaping our living spaces. With personal devices becoming our primary screens, the demand for true face-to-face connection is growing. As a result, traditional living room layouts, centred around a single TV are losing their appeal. Instead, we’re seeing a trend toward lounges that face inward, creating warm, intimate sanctuaries that encourage us to put down the remote and replace content with conversation. Enter: The conversation pit.
What is a Conversation Pit?
The conversation pit is a modern reprisal of the sunken lounge, a staple of mid-century interior design throughout the ’60s and ’70s.
Defined by a recessed floor cut directly into the home’s foundation, sunken lounges were designed to create a distinct, intimate zone for entertaining.
The conversation pit relies on low-slung modular seating, sweeping organic curves and rich textiles to achieve the same cocoon-like, social atmosphere, minus the major structural work.
Having witnessed the revival of the conversation pit at Milan Design Week earlier this year, our Director of Insights & Trends, Lucy Sutherland, confirms the trend is already taking off in Australia.
The conversation pit is a layout uniquely tailored to our open-plan homes and growing desire to entertain at home. Our own search data tells the same story: onsite searches for modular, curved, and sectional seating are up 24 per cent year-on-year, while searches across our modular and curved sofa collections have soared by 240 per cent (based on a 12-month period of Temple & Webster onsite searches from 1 Aug 2025 to 31 July 2026 versus 1 Aug 2024 to 31 July 2025).
