{"id":4016,"date":"2016-09-16T05:35:36","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T05:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sydneyhomeshow.com.au\/?p=4016"},"modified":"2016-09-16T05:35:36","modified_gmt":"2016-09-16T05:35:36","slug":"child-window-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/homeshows.com.au\/sydney\/blog\/child-window-safety","title":{"rendered":"Child window safety devices &#8211; NSW legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Legislation<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/legislation.nsw.gov.au\/regulations\/2013-688.pdf\">The Strata Schemes Management Amendment (Child Window Safety Devices) Bill 2013<\/a> stipulates Owners Corporations in NSW must have secure screens or window safety devices installed on any openable bedroom window that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has a 2 metre (or greater) fall height to the ground; and<\/li>\n<li>Is situated 1.7 metres (or less) from the inside floor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The window should\u00a0to be fitted with a device or screen that cannot open greater than 125mm. More specifically, allow a 125mm sphere pass through the window opening. It must also resist the force of 25kgs in three different points.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sydneyhomeshow.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Window-Child-Safety.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4674 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sydneyhomeshow.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Window-Child-Safety.jpg\" alt=\"Child Window Safety NSW\" width=\"1140\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homeshows.com.au\/sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/Window-Child-Safety.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/homeshows.com.au\/sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/Window-Child-Safety-300x79.jpg 300w, https:\/\/homeshows.com.au\/sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/Window-Child-Safety-1024x269.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/homeshows.com.au\/sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/Window-Child-Safety-768x202.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1140px) 100vw, 1140px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are There Alternatives to Window Locks? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Homeowners are free to choose the most suitable safety device for their windows, allowing the option of a strong security screen as a viable alternative to a window lock.<\/p>\n<p>What matters is the screen complies with the Act. Note: a fly-screen does not comply as they are flimsy and cannot resist a 25 kg force. Security screens that are reinforced, capable of resisting strong outward pressure and correctly installed meet the requirements of the new window safety laws.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Are The Benefits of Choosing a Secure Screen Over a Window Lock? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Installing a secure screen over a window lock\u00a0allows residents to fully open their windows. This\u00a0complies with the Bill and prevents\u00a0the risk of falls.<\/p>\n<p>Choosing a secure screen provides greater airflow and safety.
