The changes\u00a0simplified the use of timber construction in taller structures up to 8 storeys. This includes apartments, hotels and offices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sydneyhomeshow.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/TRADE_tradie-on-roof.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4682 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sydneyhomeshow.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/TRADE_tradie-on-roof.jpg\" alt=\"Timber Mid-Rise Apartment\" width=\"6050\" height=\"4038\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Timber buildings typically have a range of construction and environmental advantages:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>shorter build times<\/li>\n<li>lower foundation costs<\/li>\n<li>reduced traffic movement to and from the site<\/li>\n<li>lower carbon footprint<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0latter benefit is due to the fact that wood is the only construction material that stores or sequesters carbon for the life of the building.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Klymenko, the Managing Director of Planet Ark emphasised a\u00a0range of benefits.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re focussed on helping people take decisions that have positive benefits for the environment,\u201d Paul said, \u201cchoosing an apartment in timber mid-rise buildings has the potential to reduce the environmental footprint of the built environment while delivering advantages for the residents as well.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He pointed to a recent report, <a href=\"http:\/\/makeitwood.org\/documents\/doc-1253-wood--housing--health--humanity-report-2015-03-00-final.pdf\"><em>Housing, Health and Humanity<\/em><\/a> published by Planet Ark that summarises research into the beneficial effects of timber buildings on their occupants.<\/p>\n<p>The report provides a review of studies analysing the health and wellbeing benefits of wooden interiors in homes, businesses, places of learning and healing. Multiple physiological, psychological and environmental benefits were identified for wooden interiors. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improvements to occupants\u2019 emotional states<\/li>\n<li>levels of self-expression<\/li>\n<li>reduced blood pressure, heart rate and stress levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These results come from overseas research, however, we look forward to Australia contributing more to the global story.
